THE GREAT HALL, LOSELEY HOUSE
Poet, Lover and Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, John Donne was perhaps the greatest poet of the early 17th century and a great visiter of ladies. He was a fascinating and complex man whose career and thoughts echo many issues of our time. This 50 minute play explores his witty and brilliant poems, his intimate letters, thundering sermons and profound and moving meditations. It includes his early life in the 1590’s as a clever young love-poet in London,
his disastrous marriage, his struggles with poverty and obscurity, his
ordination, preaching, turbulent relationship with God and his preparation for
Loseley Park has a special connection with John Donne, as it was Ann,
daughter of Sir George More, son of the builder of Loseley, who was secretly
married to John Donne at 17 years of age. Sir George was furious when he discovered the marriage and Donne was deprived of office and imprisoned in the tower for a year. Reconciliation followed and the marriage was very happy, but in 1617 Ann died at the age of 33 giving birth to their twelfth child. John was heartbroken and never remarried. He became a committed Christian and Dean of St. Pauls. Anne’s memorial tablet lies in St. Clement Danes Church London.
